It's the MOST WONDERFUL TIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIME OF THE YEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAR...

ANNOUNCING THE SIXTH ANNUAL [livejournal.com profile] thisengland HISTORIES FICATHON AND LOVEFEST

Can you believe we've been at this for six years? Because I can't.

This year there are a couple of special issues to take into account:

The first is that this is the first ficathon that's started since The Hollow Crown aired in the UK. It doesn't change anything about the ficathon rules, really, other than that we hope it will increase interest in histories fic.

The second, which is more substantial, is that we're going to start hosting the fics on the Archive of Our Own this year! Signups will still be done as in the past -- we thought about doing them on AO3 but I couldn't make heads or tails of the setup even with a tutorial, and this is still a small enough ficathon that it should be manageable -- but when it comes time to post your fics, you can do it yourself. This should make everyone's lives a little bit easier. All administrative business will take place here, and links to ficathon fics will still be posted to this community, so we're not going anywhere!

Administrative things, how to sign up, rules, &c. PLEASE NOTE SIGNIFICANT CHANGES FOR 2013. )

To sign up:

Email all of this info to me at strangebrooch AT gmail DOT com, AND [livejournal.com profile] lareinenoire at lareinenoire AT gmail DOT com, by MONDAY JUNE 10. Don't forget to include your handle if it's not clear from your email and/or I don't know who you are. The final deadline for fics is tentatively set at THURSDAY AUGUST 15. (This is negotiable if it's a bad time for participants.) Once everyone's assignments are in, we will post all unwritten prompts at [livejournal.com profile] thisengland for anyone to write fic of any length (even if you weren't originally part of the exchange) and open the collection to all comers -- much like Yuletide Madness, in other words. All fics will then be made available onSATURDAY AUGUST 17. Authors will be revealed on SATURDAY AUGUST 24.
[identity profile] angevin2.livejournal.com
It is, once again, time for all authors to be revealed (we were going to give it a week and then we realized nobody comments much before the reveal because it's such a tiny ficathon it generally gives things away!) Here's a complete list of who wrote what in this year's ficathon. I'll also be updating the master histories fic list.

You're also free to post your fics at your own journals, at AO3, and wherever else you put fic.

Anybody up for writing a fic tonight? We are doing our best to bring you your wonderful ficathon fics, but sometimes shit happens and we need a pinch-hitter.

You don't have to have signed up previously to take the assignment. Just email me and I'll get you the info right away!

ETA: We have one! The rest of you are now off the hook. ;)
[identity profile] angevin2.livejournal.com
Or possibly an extremely nervous reminder: the deadline for Histories Ficathon V submissions is TONIGHT at MIDNIGHT CDT (GMT-5). This means that if we haven't already talked to you about lining up a pinch-hitter or an extension, we'll be expecting fics tonight!

Remember, they should go to strangebrooch at gmail dot com AND lareinenoire at gmail dot com. If you're writing for one of the mods, you need only send it to the one you're not writing for.

If you do need a pinch-hitter or an extension, we need to hear from you RIGHT AWAY. If you've already received an extension, please let me know which prompt you're using, so that we can post unused prompts for Ficathon Madness.
[identity profile] angevin2.livejournal.com
Thanks to the inability of your friendly mod to get her shit together, the deadline for this year's ficathon is being EXTENDED. The new due date for fics is THURSDAY, AUGUST 30 at MIDNIGHT CDT (i.e. midnight when it's turning into Friday, not midnight when it's turning into Thursday). Ficathon Madness prompts will go up after that, and fics will be posted on SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 2. We apologize for any inconvenience this causes.

I know a lot of people who are interested in The Histories Fandom but are kind of intimidated by the amount of stuff they don't know about either the plays or the period they're set in. So I thought, hey, we should have a resources post for things that might be helpful to histories fic writing -- stuff like, timelines, info about material culture, that kind of thing. Except that that's a ton of work and so I haven't done it yet. And then I was looking up some information about 14th-century underwear, because reasons, and I found this site, and that reminded me that I've been meaning to make this post, which I'll also make into a sticky to go along with the fic index. Eventually I am going to add the timeline that [livejournal.com profile] lareinenoire and I made that compares and contrasts the plots of the two tetralogies to what actually seems to have happened, just as soon as I finish the Henry V section.

Anyway, what kind of sites do you guys use when you need to look up in-period details? I'm especially hoping to get links on the 15th century, because my own collection, given my Richard II fixation, is slanted fairly heavily toward the 14th. I'll add anything you have in the comments to the main post.

Also, just a caveat: not all of these are hugely scholarly sites necessarily. Also some of the links on the del.icio.us pages no longer work; I'll clean them up later.

It's the MOST WONDERFUL TIME OF THE (FANNISH) YEAR...

ANNOUNCING THE FIFTH ANNUAL [livejournal.com profile] thisengland HISTORIES FICATHON AND LOVEFEST

There are a couple of slight rule changes this year, so be sure to look closely even if you're a longtime ficathon veteran!

Administrative things, how to sign up, rules, &c. )

Email all of this info to me at strangebrooch AT gmail DOT com, and/or to [livejournal.com profile] lareinenoire at lareinenoire AT gmail DOT com, by MIDNIGHT CDT on FRIDAY, JUNE 22 (well, actually Friday/Saturday, rather than Thursday/Friday). Don't forget to include your lj handle if it's not clear from your email and/or I don't know who you are. The final deadline for fics is tentatively set at WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 22. (This is negotiable if it's a bad time for participants.) Once I've received everyone's assignments, I will post all unwritten prompts at [livejournal.com profile] thisengland for anyone to write fic of any length (even if you weren't originally part of the exchange) -- much like Yuletide Madness, in other words. All fics will then be posted on SATURDAY, AUGUST 25.
[identity profile] angevin2.livejournal.com
Here is the masterlist of fics written for this year's wonderful Histories Ficathon -- a smaller group than in previous years, but, you know, insert Henry V speech here.

If you have notes you'd like to add to your post, let us know! You are also now free to repost your fic on your own lj, AO3, and wherever else you like to put fic.

OKAY YOU GUYS. It is ALMOST FICATHON TIME -- most of the fics have been received or will be received soon. The ficathon will go live on Saturday, September 3, and like we did last year, we're doing a free-for-all round!

Here's how it works:

1. Pick one (or more) of the prompts below.

2. Write a fic of any length -- from drabble to big-bang-sized epic (if you can do that in three days, I will be incredibly impressed).

3. Send it to me at strangebrooch AT gmail DOT com AND/OR lareinenoire AT gmail DOT com by MIDNIGHT EDT on SEPTEMBER 3, i.e. Friday night/Saturday morning (if you are writing for one of us, just send it to the other one, because mods like surprises too). Use the official format for headers. )

4. Profit!

These prompts are open to anyone, regardless of whether or not you originally signed up; instead of posting claims in the comments, just pick one and write. Also, IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO BE SPOILED FOR YOUR FIC, DO NOT CLICK THE CUT.

THE MADNESS BEGINS HERE )

Dear all--

We've decided to extend the fic deadline for this year's Histories Ficathon. Stories are now due on Thursday September 1. Once we've received all the submissions, we'll open up the list of unfilled prompts for Madness.

Fics will be posted on Saturday September 3 and author reveals on the 10th.

If you still don't think you'll be able to finish your submission on time, please let us know sooner rather than later, so we can arrange for a pinch-hitter.
[identity profile] angevin2.livejournal.com
There's just over 24 hours left to sign up for this year's Histories Ficathon! Signups will be due tomorrow (JUNE 21) at MIDNIGHT EDT -- that's the end of tomorrow, not the end of today. Assignments will go out as soon after that as [livejournal.com profile] lareinenoire and I can work them out.

If you're on the fence about doing the ficathon, I highly recommend it! It's great fun, and we are only mean to the characters. :D
[identity profile] angevin2.livejournal.com
We are totally still here! Just starting a little late this year. :D

ANNOUNCING THE FOURTH ANNUAL [livejournal.com profile] thisengland HISTORIES FICATHON AND LOVEFEST

Administrative things, how to sign up, rules, &c. )

Email all of this info to me at strangebrooch AT gmail DOT com, and/or to [livejournal.com profile] lareinenoire at lareinenoire AT gmail DOT com, by 21 JUNE. Don't forget to include your lj handle if it's not clear from your email and/or I don't know who you are. The final deadline for fics is tentatively set at 29 AUGUST. All fics will then be posted on 1 SEPTEMBER.

ETA: Signups for Histories Ficathon IV are now closed.

Someone's been spamming lj communities with porn, so we're switching to moderated membership for a few days. We'll change it back shortly.

We now return to your regularly scheduled programming.
[identity profile] angevin2.livejournal.com
OKAY YOU GUYS. It is ALMOST FICATHON TIME -- most of the fics have been received or will be received soon. The ficathon will go live on Thursday August 26th, and this year we are doing something a little different (borrowed from [livejournal.com profile] ides_of_april) -- a free-for-all round!

Here's how it works:

1. Pick one (or more) of the prompts below.

2. Write a fic of any length -- from drabble to big-bang-sized epic (if you can do that in three days, I will be incredibly impressed).

3. Send it to me at strangebrooch AT gmail DOT com AND/OR lareinenoire AT gmail DOT com by MIDNIGHT CDT on AUGUST 26th, i.e. Wednesday night/Thursday morning (if you are writing for one of us, just send it to the other one, because mods like surprises too). Use the official format for headers. )

4. Profit!

These prompts are open to anyone; instead of posting claims in the comments, just pick one and write. Also, IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO BE SPOILED FOR YOUR FIC, DO NOT CLICK THE CUT. In some cases prompts do appear in their entirety; this is either because I don't know which prompt the writer chose, or because the writer incorporated all aspects of the prompt into the fic and everyone deserves an equal chance at multiple stories.

THE MADNESS BEGINS HERE )
[identity profile] angevin2.livejournal.com
After some discussion with [livejournal.com profile] lareinenoire and some general mass panic, we've decided to change the deadline for the ficathon. The new deadline is SUNDAY, AUGUST 22. Unclaimed prompts will be posted on Monday, August 23. Everything else in the previous reminder post continues to apply -- send fics to me (strangebrooch AT gmail DOT com) and/or [livejournal.com profile] lareinenoire (lareinenoire AT gmail DOT com). You don't have to send them to both of us (especially if you're writing for one of us). :)
[identity profile] angevin2.livejournal.com
For your convenience and reading pleasure, an index to the fics posted in this year's ficathon. Any Histories Ficathon Madness fics posted will be added to the list (and you don't have to send them to us now; you can post them yourself).

You will note, too, the names of the authors in this post. YAY NO-LONGER-MYSTERY AUTHORS.

Oh, these are the stories in my ficathon, in my ficathon, in my ficatho-on! These are the stories in my ficathon! They're the stories that kick lots of ass! )

Richard II is clearly the big star of this year's ficathon, which makes me very, very happy, especially since the lack of Richard II fic in the world was a major impetus for starting this ficathon in the first place.

Also, one of these days I am totally going to do an "All the Histories Fic on the Web" index. Just because.
[identity profile] angevin2.livejournal.com
As of right now: all the fics we have have been posted! HOORAY. There are a couple of people who do not yet have one. The missing fics will be in shortly, I hope.

We've removed the author's notes lest info about beta-readers (and such) give away the game (this is what happens in a tiny tiny fandom where most of the writers know each other). They'll be restored after the reveal (which will be in a week).

Also, later this week I'm going to post the unclaimed prompts, in a sort of Histories Ficathon Madness gesture! So that will be fun.
[identity profile] angevin2.livejournal.com
Since the deadline is AUGUST 15 at 12:00 AM CDT (that's THIS SATURDAY ACTUALLY A WEEK FROM THIS SATURDAY HOLY CRAP OMG FLAIL ALSO I CANNOT REMEMBER WHAT DAMN DAY IT IS) some of you may wish to know what you should include with your fics. Please include the following information in your headers:

Title:
Author: [will obviously not be visible at first; I'll add them later]
Play:
Recipient:
Character(s)/Pairing(s):
Warnings: [if any; please warn for common triggers]
Rating:
Notes: [optional]
Summary:

Please send all submissions as Word-compatible files (.doc, .rtf, or .txt). DO NOT send files with a .docx file extension, as then I won't be able to open them. Please be sure to double-check all formatting before sending in your fics.

Also, if you are going to need a pinch hitter, please let me know as soon as possible so that I can find one.
[identity profile] angevin2.livejournal.com
Please don't post community advertisements to this community without asking permission. I will probably say it's okay if it's related to Shakespeare's histories, performances thereof, or the actual historical figures in the plays.
