It's the MOST WONDERFUL TIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIME OF THE YEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAR...

ANNOUNCING THE SIXTH ANNUAL [livejournal.com profile] thisengland HISTORIES FICATHON AND LOVEFEST

Can you believe we've been at this for six years? Because I can't.

This year there are a couple of special issues to take into account:

The first is that this is the first ficathon that's started since The Hollow Crown aired in the UK. It doesn't change anything about the ficathon rules, really, other than that we hope it will increase interest in histories fic.

The second, which is more substantial, is that we're going to start hosting the fics on the Archive of Our Own this year! Signups will still be done as in the past -- we thought about doing them on AO3 but I couldn't make heads or tails of the setup even with a tutorial, and this is still a small enough ficathon that it should be manageable -- but when it comes time to post your fics, you can do it yourself. This should make everyone's lives a little bit easier. All administrative business will take place here, and links to ficathon fics will still be posted to this community, so we're not going anywhere!

Administrative things, how to sign up, rules, &c. PLEASE NOTE SIGNIFICANT CHANGES FOR 2013. )

To sign up:

Email all of this info to me at strangebrooch AT gmail DOT com, AND [livejournal.com profile] lareinenoire at lareinenoire AT gmail DOT com, by MONDAY JUNE 10. Don't forget to include your handle if it's not clear from your email and/or I don't know who you are. The final deadline for fics is tentatively set at THURSDAY AUGUST 15. (This is negotiable if it's a bad time for participants.) Once everyone's assignments are in, we will post all unwritten prompts at [livejournal.com profile] thisengland for anyone to write fic of any length (even if you weren't originally part of the exchange) and open the collection to all comers -- much like Yuletide Madness, in other words. All fics will then be made available onSATURDAY AUGUST 17. Authors will be revealed on SATURDAY AUGUST 24.

I trust this is okay to post here - this seems to be probably the most active Shakespeare comm, anyway. Please forgive me and delete, if not. Any small British fandoms welcome in this comment fest, including Shakespeare, the histories, and historical RPF.

A Multifandom comment fest for small to medium British fandoms. All and any fanworks welcome. Come and join in! (Click on the banner for the link.)

It is, once again, time for all authors to be revealed (we were going to give it a week and then we realized nobody comments much before the reveal because it's such a tiny ficathon it generally gives things away!) Here's a complete list of who wrote what in this year's ficathon. I'll also be updating the master histories fic list.

You're also free to post your fics at your own journals, at AO3, and wherever else you put fic.

Title: This Keen Encounter
Author: [livejournal.com profile] lareinenoire
Recipient: [livejournal.com profile] the_alchemist
Play: Richard III, some 3 Henry VI
Characters / Pairings: Richard of Gloucester, Lady Anne; Richard/Anne
Rating: T
Warnings: Yorks behaving badly
Summary: Was ever woman in this humour wooed? Was ever woman in this humour won?
Notes: I couldn't resist this prompt, in spite of the play itself trying to argue against me. This fic takes some minor liberties with the chronology of Acts 1-2 of R3 in order to explain, among other things, how Clarence ended up with children old enough to talk when he got married in Act 4 of 3H6 and one assumes from the state of Henry VI's corpse that R3 begins within several days (maybe, if you stretch it, several weeks) of the end of 3H6 and that acts 1-2 take place over the space of several more days.

[identity profile] lareinenoire.livejournal.com
Title: Quot estis in convivio
Author: [livejournal.com profile] kerrypolka
Play: Henry IVs
Recipient: [livejournal.com profile] likeadeuce
Characters: Kate Percy, Harry Percy, Doll Tearsheet, Prince Hal, Falstaff, Mrs Quickly, Pistol
Warnings: Swears (including misogynist ones)
Rating: R
Notes: Modern AU (City of London, Eastcheap)
Summary: That was the problem with working with Harry Percy. For some reason, within ten minutes of starting a conversation with him, Kate's brain short-circuited and she was always left either mouthing wordlessly or finding herself saying things like, "So you thought it would be a good idea to punch Mervyn King at the Budget announcement?"

You couldn't really know where you were going, to get to the Boar's Head.  )
[identity profile] lareinenoire.livejournal.com
Title: Is There Not Employment?
Author: [livejournal.com profile] gileonnen
Play: 1 Henry IV
Recipient: [livejournal.com profile] likeadeuce
Characters / Pairings: Bardolph, Mistress Quickly, Westmorland, York (Aumerle), Falstaff, Peto, Hal
Warnings: Cursing, inappropriate funereal conversations
Rating: PG
Summary: Bardolph isn't sure who he's spying for, after the Duke of York dies.

Is There Not Employment? )
[identity profile] lareinenoire.livejournal.com
Title: Fit You With Position
Author: [livejournal.com profile] likeadeuce
Play: Henry IV, I & 2
Recipient: [livejournal.com profile] kerrypolka
Character(s)/Pairing(s): John of Lancaster, Prince Hal (genderswap AU)
Rating: PG
Notes: Shares a universe with And Follow Your Dreams Down
Summary: Janna wouldn't want you to think that her sister Hallie speaks for all the Bolingbroke children.

All of the old faces/Ask you why you're back/They fit you with position/And the keys to your daddy's Cadillac -- "Adam Raised a Cain," Bruce Springsteen

Fit You With Position )
[identity profile] lareinenoire.livejournal.com
Title: Bestiary
Author: [livejournal.com profile] likeadeuce
Play: Richard III
Recipient: [livejournal.com profile] gileonnen
Character(s)/Pairing(s): Catesby, Ratcliff, Richard, Buckingham
Warnings: References to child prostitution and human trafficking, implication of past sexual abuse and psychological consequences. Also, in-character/societal ageism, lookism, sexism and ableism, which do not reflect the views of the author.
Rating: R
Notes: Space opera-ish AU. I'm not going to use the word "dystopia," but you probably wouldn't want to live here, any more than you'd want to live in 15th century Britain, though for somewhat different reasons.
Summary: Catesby, Ratcliff, and Buckingham are each, in their own way, Richard's creatures. Of course, if Richard has his way, so is everyone.

Bestiary )
[identity profile] lareinenoire.livejournal.com
Title: Strong Infection
Author: [livejournal.com profile] speak_me_fair
Play: Richard II
Recipient: [livejournal.com profile] angevin2
Character(s)/Pairing(s): Richard/Aumerle, Richard/Henry UST, Richard/Anne (past)
Warnings: AU. Zombie AU. Corpse Imagery. Fire. Tombs. Nightmares. Implied Sex. Richard POV.
Rating: R for imagery.
Notes: Historical age!Isabelle while everyone else really isn't. Sorry...
Summary: When there's an unidentified plague in Europe, shipping over a corpse from Italy just might be the most terrible plan in the history of terrible planning. Then again, who needs a reason to start setting things on fire? In which (mostly) everyone stays alive, brains are a highly prized commodity, Henry looks good in firelight, Richard is Richard, Edward is long-suffering, and no-one wants to know about Hal and the Percies.

Title: Kings of the Earth
Author: [livejournal.com profile] highfantastical
Play: Richard II
Recipient: [livejournal.com profile] speak_me_fair
Character(s)/Pairing(s): Richard II, the Duke of Aumerle, Anne of Bohemia (deceased)
Warnings: Grief
Rating: PG
Summary: Your crown and your heart are different things.

He couldn't die like a child made from mortal flesh, or like a queen. )
[identity profile] angevin2.livejournal.com
Title: Mine Earthly Joy
Author: [livejournal.com profile] speak_me_fair
Play: Richard II
Recipient: [livejournal.com profile] lareinenoire
Character(s)/Pairing(s): Isabel, Richard.
Warnings: Thoughts of underage sex
Rating: R due to the above
Summary: Isabel knows what she wants, even if she cannot have it. And to know a thing is to make it true.

Mine Earthly Joy )
[identity profile] angevin2.livejournal.com
Title: And Villeins Ye Shall Remain
Author: [livejournal.com profile] angevin2
Play: Richard II, pre-canon
Recipient: [livejournal.com profile] highfantastical
Character(s)/Pairing(s): Richard II, Henry Bolingbroke, with a couple of mildly slashy bits; references to Henry/Mary de Bohun and Richard/Robert de Vere that don't really affect the story
Warnings: fairly graphic discussion of severed heads, incessant monologizing, unsubtle dramatic irony, privileged people being all sad about being oppressors
Rating: PG for discussion of violence
Summary: Henry isn't coping very well with the aftermath of the Peasants' Revolt. Surprisingly, neither is Richard.
Notes: Many thanks to R. and A. for beta-reading, church-picking, and general support/handholding, and to M., who is largely responsible for most of my knowledge of the revolt. Details of events (insofar as they appear in this fic) are drawn from various chronicles, Nigel Saul's biography of Richard, and R.B. Dobson's book on the revolt, which is still fairly standard. The rumor about Richard letting the rebels into the Tower is drawn from Walsingham; I'm not sure whether it was actually current or just Walsingham maligning Richard after the deposition (it wouldn't be the only time he did this), but I couldn't resist mentioning it. Finally, I know the prompt asked for h/c, but I couldn't get Richard and Henry to have any sort of interaction that involves much comfort. They are essentially the opposite of it. I hope this will please nevertheless; it was fun to write.

Henry hasn't slept well since the rising. )
[identity profile] angevin2.livejournal.com
Title: Unmasked
Author: [livejournal.com profile] gileonnen
Play: Richard II/1 Henry IV
Recipient: [livejournal.com profile] gehayi
Characters / Pairings: Falstaff, Hal, Poins, Francis, Mistress Quickly, Richard II, Henry IV
Warnings: Profanity, drunkenness, fat-shaming language, mentions of the Vietnam War, alternate universe/alternate reality with superheroes
Rating: T
Summary: Falstaff wants to be a superhero. Hal isn't so sure that's a good idea.

Anybody up for writing a fic tonight? We are doing our best to bring you your wonderful ficathon fics, but sometimes shit happens and we need a pinch-hitter.

You don't have to have signed up previously to take the assignment. Just email me and I'll get you the info right away!

ETA: We have one! The rest of you are now off the hook. ;)
[identity profile] angevin2.livejournal.com
All ficathon participants have been accounted for, and this means it's TIME FOR A HISTORIES-FIC FREE-FOR-ALL. Unused prompts are listed below.

Histories Ficathon Madness is open to everyone, whether you are an official ficathon participant, someone hanging around because it's an interesting idea or because you liked The Hollow Crown, or if you signed up but had to default.

Here's how it works:

1. Pick one (or more) of the prompts below.

2. Write a fic of any length -- from drabble to big-bang-sized epic (if you can do that in three days, I will be incredibly impressed).

3. Send it to me at strangebrooch AT gmail DOT com AND/OR lareinenoire AT gmail DOT com by NOON CDT on SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 2 (if you are writing for one of us, just send it to the other one, because mods like surprises too). Use the official format for headers )

4. Profit!

These prompts are open to anyone, regardless of whether or not you originally signed up; instead of posting claims in the comments, just pick one and write. Also, ALL THE PROMPTS ARE LISTED BELOW EXCEPT PROMPTS ALREADY USED. IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO BE SPOILED FOR YOUR FIC, DO NOT CLICK THE CUT.

THE MADNESS BEGINS HERE )
[identity profile] angevin2.livejournal.com
Or possibly an extremely nervous reminder: the deadline for Histories Ficathon V submissions is TONIGHT at MIDNIGHT CDT (GMT-5). This means that if we haven't already talked to you about lining up a pinch-hitter or an extension, we'll be expecting fics tonight!

Remember, they should go to strangebrooch at gmail dot com AND lareinenoire at gmail dot com. If you're writing for one of the mods, you need only send it to the one you're not writing for.

If you do need a pinch-hitter or an extension, we need to hear from you RIGHT AWAY. If you've already received an extension, please let me know which prompt you're using, so that we can post unused prompts for Ficathon Madness.
[identity profile] angevin2.livejournal.com
Thanks to the inability of your friendly mod to get her shit together, the deadline for this year's ficathon is being EXTENDED. The new due date for fics is THURSDAY, AUGUST 30 at MIDNIGHT CDT (i.e. midnight when it's turning into Friday, not midnight when it's turning into Thursday). Ficathon Madness prompts will go up after that, and fics will be posted on SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 2. We apologize for any inconvenience this causes.
[identity profile] angevin2.livejournal.com
We're collecting them here. If you need info or want to share it, that's the place.
[identity profile] angevin2.livejournal.com
I know a lot of people who are interested in The Histories Fandom but are kind of intimidated by the amount of stuff they don't know about either the plays or the period they're set in. So I thought, hey, we should have a resources post for things that might be helpful to histories fic writing -- stuff like, timelines, info about material culture, that kind of thing. Except that that's a ton of work and so I haven't done it yet. And then I was looking up some information about 14th-century underwear, because reasons, and I found this site, and that reminded me that I've been meaning to make this post, which I'll also make into a sticky to go along with the fic index. Eventually I am going to add the timeline that [livejournal.com profile] lareinenoire and I made that compares and contrasts the plots of the two tetralogies to what actually seems to have happened, just as soon as I finish the Henry V section.

Anyway, what kind of sites do you guys use when you need to look up in-period details? I'm especially hoping to get links on the 15th century, because my own collection, given my Richard II fixation, is slanted fairly heavily toward the 14th. I'll add anything you have in the comments to the main post.

Also, just a caveat: not all of these are hugely scholarly sites necessarily. Also some of the links on the del.icio.us pages no longer work; I'll clean them up later.
