OKAY YOU GUYS. It is ALMOST FICATHON TIME -- most of the fics have been received or will be received soon. The ficathon will go live on Thursday August 26th, and this year we are doing something a little different (borrowed from [livejournal.com profile] ides_of_april) -- a free-for-all round!

Here's how it works:

1. Pick one (or more) of the prompts below.

2. Write a fic of any length -- from drabble to big-bang-sized epic (if you can do that in three days, I will be incredibly impressed).

3. Send it to me at strangebrooch AT gmail DOT com AND/OR lareinenoire AT gmail DOT com by MIDNIGHT CDT on AUGUST 26th, i.e. Wednesday night/Thursday morning (if you are writing for one of us, just send it to the other one, because mods like surprises too). Use the official format for headers. )

4. Profit!

These prompts are open to anyone; instead of posting claims in the comments, just pick one and write. Also, IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO BE SPOILED FOR YOUR FIC, DO NOT CLICK THE CUT. In some cases prompts do appear in their entirety; this is either because I don't know which prompt the writer chose, or because the writer incorporated all aspects of the prompt into the fic and everyone deserves an equal chance at multiple stories.

THE MADNESS BEGINS HERE )
[identity profile] angevin2.livejournal.com
After some discussion with [livejournal.com profile] lareinenoire and some general mass panic, we've decided to change the deadline for the ficathon. The new deadline is SUNDAY, AUGUST 22. Unclaimed prompts will be posted on Monday, August 23. Everything else in the previous reminder post continues to apply -- send fics to me (strangebrooch AT gmail DOT com) and/or [livejournal.com profile] lareinenoire (lareinenoire AT gmail DOT com). You don't have to send them to both of us (especially if you're writing for one of us). :)
[identity profile] lareinenoire.livejournal.com
Just a quick post to say that assignments for this year's Histories Ficathon have gone out. If for whatever reason you haven't received yours, drop us an e-mail and let us know so we can resend it. Also, let us know if you've got any questions either for us or for your recipient and we'll pass them on.

Happy writing!

Only one more day to sign up for THE FICATHON! Rules for doing so are available in the linked post.

I know there are several of you who have said you are going to sign up and have not officially done so, so now is the time. :D

ETA Since there's one late signup coming in thanks to extraordinary circumstances, signups will be open through tomorrow (Wednesday 6/16) as well. :D

Not one, but two!

As is evident from the nature of the exchange, both of these fics have AU settings.

For Truth, For Duty, and for Loyalty (Richard III) by [livejournal.com profile] gileonnen - Richard of Gloucester has a plan for the planet of Albia, and Ratcliffe wants to be part of it. Science fiction AU. Featuring art by [livejournal.com profile] speak_me_fair.

Delirien (1 Henry VI) by [livejournal.com profile] lareinenoire - In the giddy years of the early twentieth century, the families of York and Lancaster seem to have come to an uneasy truce when Humphrey Lancaster befriends young Richard York and offers him a chance to mend his wrecked fortunes. What neither of them anticipates is the war that will destroy everything they know. Featuring a fanmix by [livejournal.com profile] cherith and art by [livejournal.com profile] gileonnen.

Both links are to the index pages, which include information about the artists as well.

HEYYYYYYY YOOOOOOOOOOUUUUUUUUU GUUUUUUUUUUUUUUYYYYYYYYYS /electric company

It is THAT TIME OF YEAR AGAIN, in which it is time to increase the amount of histories fic in the world by lots. We have done this twice now, and I feel that by fandom standards that counts as an Institution.

ANNOUNCING THE THIRD ANNUAL [livejournal.com profile] thisengland HISTORIES FICATHON AND LOVEFEST

Administrative things, how to sign up, rules, &c. )

Email all of this info to me at strangebrooch AT gmail DOT com, or to [livejournal.com profile] lareinenoire at lareinenoire AT gmail DOT com, by 15 JUNE. Don't forget to include your lj handle if it's not clear from your email and/or I don't know who you are. Alternately, I suppose you could just post here. The final deadline for fics is tentatively set at 15 AUGUST. (This is negotiable if it's a bad time for participants.)

NEW FOR 2010: In the past we've just posted the fics more or less as soon as we got them. This year we have decided to change that and follow the practice of [livejournal.com profile] ides_of_april, and wait two days before posting the fics. In the meantime, I will post all unwritten prompts at [livejournal.com profile] thisengland for anyone to write fic of any length (even if you weren't originally part of the exchange). I'll explain the rules for that when it's a little closer to the deadline.

So I was talking to [livejournal.com profile] faithhopetricks and [livejournal.com profile] speak_me_fair about things that should be done in productions of the histories but never (or rarely) are. (The specific thing that triggered it is that none of us had ever seen a production of the improv scene in 1H4 that took advantage of being in a tetralogy to play up the echoes of Richard II's deposition.)

And from this came the question of things we would totally put in the histories if we were in charge of the Shakespeare world.

I was going to write up my own list to start, but it would take me about three hours to write, so I will put them in in the comments. What sorts of things do you think should turn up in productions of the histories (but don't or probably don't)? ALTERNATELY what sorts of things do directors always seem to do that they shouldn't?
[identity profile] likeadeuce.livejournal.com
Hi, all! I've been a lurker on this community for a while and enjoy the discussion here. But only tonight did I have an experience that compelled me to turn to this community for advice. For context, I saw a performance of Henry IV, Part I at the American Shakespeare Center in Staunton, Virginia. This was my first time seeing a live performance of this play. As always at ASC, it was a lively fast-paced production -- the venue is a reproduction of Blackfriars Theatre, and I highly recommend seeing one of their shows if you're in the area -- but one particular moment stuck out at me. One of the things ASC includes with their program is music during the intros and intermissions. Specifically, the ensemble plays guitar and sings acoustic versions of various rock and pop songs which, as often as not, reflect some kind of (possibly irreverent and even inappropriate) reference to the events of the play. For instance, when I saw Lear there, the songs included the Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter" and U2's "Love is Blindness".

During the interlude for this production of H4.1, one of the songs chosen was "Kiss Off" by the Violent Femmes. I think that some explanation was given of how the song related to the play, but I came in too late to hear it. So, members of [livejournal.com profile] thisengland! Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to tell me which character(s) in this play the song "Kiss Off" could apply to. Which character is saying this to whom, and bonus points for alternate universe scenarios in which one of the characters would actually have an opportunity to play it for the other(s). I'd say bonus points for subtext (or, well, for the realization of existing subtext), but that goes without saying.

In case you don't know the song, here's a live performance video from YouTube.

Lyrics Behind the Cut )

Incidentally, I'm asking this question because I think it's implausible that the song could apply to the play; it's more that there are so many possibilities.

Really, I'd just take an AU with an excuse for Hotspur to wear the T-shirt the lead singer has on in that video.

A couple more notes on the production: (1) During the scene where Poins and Hal are role-playing as Hotspur and Kate, Poins pretended to grab Hal's breast, and Hal smacked his hand; (2) One of the things that I never assigned particular significance to before seeing a live production of this play is that Poins and Hal role-play as Hotspur and Kate. I love the histories, you guys.

Oooh!

Well, now I know what I want for Christmas!

Richard the Third is an epic two-player game that recreates the 15th century, bloody dynastic struggle between the royal houses of Lancaster and York for the throne of England. Will the mad-king Henry VI and his Queen Margaret keep the throne or will the Duke of York recover it for the Plantagenets. Also strutting across the game's stage are Edward IV, Richard III, Henry VII, and Warwick, the notorious "Kingmaker".

The object of play is to eliminate all five enemy heirs and/or win control of the powerful nobles of England. The Lancastrians start the game holding the throne, and the Yorkists are in exile ready to invade. Kingship can be won or lost several times during the game. Will Richard III emerge triumphant, or will he perish in battle as he did historically?

Richard III is the first of a series of games about Shakespeare's historical plays. Other titles may include Julius Caesar, Macbeth, and Henry V.

EDIT: Since this blurb seems to have been causing an alarming amount of wailing and teeth-gnashing throughout livejournal, can I please point out that it was written by someone at Columbia Games, and not by me or anyone on this community. If you really find it that upsetting, you could write to them at one of these addresses.

Title: Sic semper traditores
Author: [livejournal.com profile] lareinenoire
Play: Henry V
Characters: King Henry, Scroop, Thomas Grey, Richard of Cambridge
Rating: PG
Wordcount: 1146
Warnings: Character deaths
Summary: Harry Lancaster does not suffer traitors gladly.
Notes: Drabble originally written for [livejournal.com profile] angevin2, who requested 'something in the Great Big AU, featuring the Lancasters'. Title translates to 'Thus ever for traitors'. I realised the original post was locked and decided to repost it here with the rest.

It had taken Henry Scrope a good forty-eight hours to discover what was so peculiar about Harry Lancaster's latest house party. )

Title: Do not see my fair rose wither
Author: [livejournal.com profile] lareinenoire
Play: 1 Henry IV
Characters / Pairings: Hal, Isabel, Richard (flashback); Hal/Isabel, Richard/Isabel, Hal/Richard (sort of)
Rating: PG
Summary: After Richard's death, Isabel is escaping ghosts and Hal is chasing them.
Wordcount: 2153
Author's Notes: Part of the Big Shakespeare Histories AU, set just after To Mock the Expectation of the World. Regarding the above pairings, the timeline has been squashed somewhat, such that Hal is eighteen at the deposition, and Isabel is sixteen when she marries Richard.

There was no funeral in the end. )
[identity profile] lareinenoire.livejournal.com
So, as many of you are probably aware, [livejournal.com profile] angevin2 and I are collaborating on a giant AU based on Shakespeare's history plays, spanning from the late Victorian period to the early 1950s. So far, we have the following bits posted (aside from a few small drabbles):

Nocturnal (Richard II, WIP)
To Mock the Expectation of the World (Richard II / 1 Henry IV)
- with a coda Ave Caesar, written by [livejournal.com profile] speak_me_fair
Sic semper traditores (Henry V)
An Exchange of Favours (Henry VIs)

However, we have one large problem. We don't have a name for the Plantagenets. Everyone else has names (York, Lancaster, Warwick, Poins, etc). But Richard II doesn't have a last name, aside from Plantagenet, which really doesn't work. Neither does Bordeaux, for obvious reasons. And we need a name that works not only for Richard II, but also presumably for Edward III, the Black Prince, and so forth.

(We do have an explanation for the whole York-Lancaster thing that involves intermarrying and younger sons and so forth.)

So, we are taking suggestions. Something English and appropriately snooty. Bonus points for any sort of Plantagenet reference.

[Poll #1452042]

ETA: Thank you so much, everyone, for the suggestions! We've decided to follow the Anjou-Pear route and go with 'Perrivale'. However, we promise that someone in this AU will be named Throatwarbler-Mangrove. We just don't know who yet.

I have prepared an index of Damn Near All the Histories Fic on the Web. If I have omitted anything you wrote, it isn't a value-judgment but either a lack of awareness or a brain lapse on my part. Please feel free to let me know in the comments if there's anything I forgot! Or if there is any King John or Henry VIII fic out there; I've never heard of any. (NB that King John fic exists now. YAY!) and now there is also Henry VIII fic!

Posts marked with an asterisk (*) are friends-locked. If the authors want me to take them out of the index, I will do so. Posts marked with a plus sign (+) are drabbles. With fics that take place during more than one play, or that take place during one play but have more bearing on another one, I have used my discretion, but generally cross-reference.

For your convenience and reading pleasure, an index to the fics posted in this year's ficathon. Any Histories Ficathon Madness fics posted will be added to the list (and you don't have to send them to us now; you can post them yourself).

You will note, too, the names of the authors in this post. YAY NO-LONGER-MYSTERY AUTHORS.

Oh, these are the stories in my ficathon, in my ficathon, in my ficatho-on! These are the stories in my ficathon! They're the stories that kick lots of ass! )

Richard II is clearly the big star of this year's ficathon, which makes me very, very happy, especially since the lack of Richard II fic in the world was a major impetus for starting this ficathon in the first place.

Also, one of these days I am totally going to do an "All the Histories Fic on the Web" index. Just because.
[identity profile] angevin2.livejournal.com
Now that most of the official fics (save one) have been posted, it's time for HISTORIES FICATHON MADNESS.

The way that works is as follows: I'm posting all the unclaimed prompts from the ficathon below. If you want to write one of them, go ahead and do so, and then send it to me (strangebrooch AT gmail DOT com) or to [livejournal.com profile] lareinenoire (lareinenoire AT gmail DOT com). Basically it's like NYR for Yuletide. Please include the standard header info in your submission.

Also, HFM fics can be of any length, and you don't have to have signed up to participate, nor does defaulting (with or without notice) on a previous ficathon affect your ability to take part. There's no deadline; if you get a submission in before the reveal (next week) it'll go up anonymously; if not, author info will go up with the post (or I guess you could just post it yourself in that case).

And now, the requests! )

Characters/Pairings: Constable of France
Rating: PG
Warnings: None
Summary: A disease in the blood, some whispered. A curse on the house of Valois. Perhaps that was what had brought the English, for, surely, the son of a man who had murdered an anointed King should have been struck down long ere this.
Notes: Your proper fic will be up shortly. We just wanted to make sure everybody got something today.

Warnings: Guns and liquor
Summary: IF Hotspur were a police commander in the 1930s, AND also everyone in the story were genderswapped, THEN he might look like Katharine Hepburn, and anachronisms and tacked-on happy endings would probably abound.
Author's note: Shakespeare condensed characters from the history, and I've condensed characters from the Shakespeare! Another few rounds of this and Hotspur will be the only character in the entire story.
