Okay, so I promised I'd write you a longer comment with THINGS THAT ARE AWESOME ABOUT THIS FIC after I stopped flailing so. Things that are awesome about this fic!
- The recurring "Really bad shit has to happen before Richard realizes he fucked something up" theme of Histories Ficathon. And that Richard does in fact get that. And also the Richard POV in general is quite lovely!
- The whole found-family theme, because the histories are so much about fucked-up dysfunctional families, and I love that they get to be collectively functional.
- Kate getting to join the guys and bust some heads.
- The fact that it's Hal's discovery that setting shit on fire totally works. Because of course it is.
- There is a kind of thematic appropriateness to the fact that one of the biggest acts of kindness you can do for someone in this universe is to kill their zombified loved ones for them -- I haven't articulated to myself the precise way in which it is appropriate, but it fits. (Also I am evil so I do admit to a bit of schadenfreude about Northumberland. Because he is awful.)
- Richard is a good musician! ADORABLE.
- ohgod, "awesome" is not really the right word for the stuff with Anne because it was UNBEARABLY UPSETTING but also the sort of thing that kind of needs to be there. But GOD IT WAS EFFECTIVE IN ITS SADNESS AND HORROR. MY POOR BABIES.
- The Richard/Henry scene was completely perfect in every way.
- As was Edward and Isabelle's music lesson. Because COMPLETELY ADORABLE. This fic may in fact have more adorability than any other zombie apocalypse fic. Big brother!Edward is the cutest thing ever, except maybe Isabelle. (Also I love her friendship with Henry's kids, which is the sort of thing that is totally sensible and I had never really thought of.)
- The Richard/Edward stuff near the end is totally gorgeous and sweet, and the earthy imagery is perfect.
- And the ending! It is so hopeful! I LOVE THEM ALL SO MUCH. THANK YOU AGAIN A MILLION BILLION TIMES. <33333333
