I am so thrilled you got the fact that Hal's father is the only one he can't quite map - even if he's getting the others wrong, he's at least seeing something in them, but when it comes to his father, it's like a frosted glass wall up between them.
And yes! Hal is very much 'See, I'm the only one who's thought of this in the history of ever', which always makes me stare a bit, because...er....no, Hal, really really not....
